Eye on the Street: New Art on Wythe

October 3, 2007

Wythe Avenue Art One
Here’s some new imagery that appeared recently on Wythe Avenue between N. 3rd and N. 4th Streets. The one above is on a wall that has drawn a great deal of street art over the years. The one below just appeared on a nearby construction fence.

Williamsburg Street Art Takes Happy Turn

September 19, 2007

Stuffed Animal Dog on Rock
We’ve come across some complaints this week that street art in Williamsburg is too “negative” and “dark.” Well, this isn’t classic street art, but it’s a street-art like display we found on N. 8th Street near Kent Avenue. There is nothing dark or negative about it. Dare we call it cheerful?

Berry Street Williamsburg Art Mystery Solved

September 16, 2007

Berry Art Two
We knew there was something odd about the street art that popped up around the building going in next to 55 Berry in Williamsburg last week. Something about it told us the material on N. 10th and N. 11th Streets wasn’t a standard installation of street art, but we had no idea what it was and did not have time to check it out, so we put the pics aside. Now, thanks to Jake Dobkin at Gothamist, who is one of the Number One authorities on the city’s street art scene–and what’s legit and what’s not–the mystery is solved: the developer paid artists for the work. You can draw your own conclusions about whether it’s an attempt to make the scaffolding look nice or to get some coolness points from the art. You can read the full explanation over at Gothamist.

Goodbye N. 6th Street Faile Wall, Hello Condos

August 28, 2007

Faile Wall August
We snapped this photo on Sunday afternoon simply to capture some small changes on the “Faile Wall” on N. 6th Street between Wythe and Kent. Then, yesterday, upon returning from a summer blogging hiatus, our friend INSIJS reported that demolition started yesterday on this site. Definitely check out INSIJS’ full post, which includes some interesting history of what has been a favorite posting spot for street art on N. 6th Street (he calls it a “Wailing Wall for street art fans“) and a discussion of the future use of this and adjacent parcels. (You get two guesses and the short form of the word has five letters and starts with a “c” and ends with an “o.”) So, the question of the day is: What will the market be for luxury condos directly across the street from the Music Hall of Williamsburg?

Borf Gets Tagged on N. 6th Street

July 16, 2007

Borf Tagged
The half life of street art can be long(ish) or short. A case in point of the latter is this piece by Borf on N. 6th Street in Williamsburg that appeared on the same wall where a destroy Banksy used to be and where a number of splashings took place. In any case, a piece to its right was roller painted over and the Borf is now semi-tagged.

N. 6th Street #2: Have a Seat

N 6th Street Couch
If you read GL, you know we love a good street couch, and we especially enjoy ones with great backgrounds, like this one on N. 6th Street in Williamsburg. Nixon and Chairman Mao work well with it. So, the last role played by some Brooklyn sofas is street art.

N. 6th Street #1: Climbover Girl and Friend

June 18, 2007

Climbover Girl and Friend
Williamsburg blogger INSIJS first posted about this new artwork on N. 6th Street last week, wondering if it was the work of Banksy or another street artist. It’s apparently not a Banksy, but we found that the Climbover Girl had a friend when we visited yesterday.

A Little More New Williamsburg Street Art

Street Art New2
Yesterday, we noted a bunch of new street art that has appeared in Williamsburg. Here are a couple of more images of the new additions, which are off of Kent Avenue.

Big new displays of street are in Williamsburg are less frequent than they were a few years ago. So we were happy to find a big installation that went up during the last week along Kent Avenue and some side streets. Here are a few photos for now.
