If ever there was a sign that Spring is right around the corner, this line up of street furniture from Arion Place in Bed-Stuy is it. It comes from the camera of our Roving Correspondent, Miss Heather, of course.

Street Couch Series: Bed-Stuy Office Couch

March 16, 2008

bed stuy couch
Here’s one from the streets of Bed-Stuy via Miss Heather. We call it Waiting Room Couch with Mattress and Trash as it combines all three vital elements. At least, we hope that’s a waiting room couch, because it sure doesn’t look like something comfortable to have at home.

Disconnected in Brooklyn on Craigslist: I Was the S&M Keynote Speaker

March 9, 2008

Oh, Sunday Brookyn Craigslist Missed Connections, we do love you sometimes. We will say nothing about this weeks selection, except to present it:

Attendees from impromptu seminar on S&M held by 7 min mile runner – w4m – 28

Searching for attendees of an impromptu seminar that took place last Saturday March 1 in bed-stuy. Saw some of you at the meet and greet/surprise party that took place beforehand. I was the keynote speaker on S&M. Unfortunately I left before some of the attendees were able to sign my guestbook and provide me with their contact information. I apologize if anyone was trying to catch up with me, considering I run a 7 minute mile on tempo runs. Only one of you will remember this … I wasn’t accidentally touching your leg! Prove to me you were there, by telling me what decoration/image adorned the cake.

Superb.

Street Couch Series: Bed-Stuy Beauty

March 7, 2008

Madison Street Couch Bed Stuy Sofa
This beauty comes from Madison Street in Bed-Stuy. Unlike many street couches, which are junked, this sample is in very good shape. If the weather were a bit warmer, it would be ready for serious sidewalk enjoyment. It comes, of course, from Miss Heather.

The Pinky Building of Bedford Ave. in Bed-Stuy

March 6, 2008

an argument for contextual zoning
We can’t say we’ve focused on this building before, but it has risen at 1056 Bedford Avenue at Clifton Place and it is the work of architect Robert Scarano. Our Roving Correspondent Miss Heather sent in these shots, along with the comment that it’s “an argument for contextual zoning.” The building has been hobbled by a partial Stop Work Order for a while. The complaints lodged during construction of the building also make for interesting reading and include “chunks of falling concrete” and debris that was falling and “scaring pedestrians.” There was also a complaint about the scaffolding being “unstable” and, in another instance, of workers “throwing debris” that was hitting other buildings. We’re loving the monolith look with the blank walls on both sides.

Kosciusko Street Bonus: A Street TV

March 5, 2008

The image of the Fingerish Building below came with a photo of this humongous TV on the street outside, courtesy of our wide-ranging correspondent Miss Heather. It’s seen better days, but boy, is it big.

Fingerlike on Kosciusko Street in Bed-Stuy

March 5, 2008

31 Kosciusko Crop
This is 31 Kosciusko Street in Bed-Stuy between Bedford and Nostrand. Miss Heather emailed it over after having a look at new construction in the neighborhood because it struck as being somewhat Fingerlike. We agree that it has the essential qualities that make a Finger Building, although the height of the building it adjoins doesn’t make a fully erect finger, just a semi-erect one. Interestingly, the original five-story design came from Henry Radusky of Bricolage Designs, who is called “Too Tall” by some. So, it came back as the 12-story building that’s pictured here. Our friends at Brownstoner also took a look at it back in January.
